Overall, city life can be quite exciting and full and there are so many things to do in the downtown vicinity I think you will find it quite exciting discovering new things to do all of the time. So you have many options.īest to take a trip to the city and make an appointment with a realtor who can give you a quick tour of some of the areas in the evening and you can see for yourself whether there are women walking around during the later hours (remembering of course the very nasty Chicago winters which are going to be much worse than what you are use to). There are many newer buildings right within walking distance of the Tower in all directions or you can live in the South Loop which is a short ride away (probably have to transfer to the Brown line which is a block away).
With this said, in a typical "safer" community in the city, you will find people walking their dogs all of the time. But I am guessing the area you are coming from is probably a 1 or 2 (on a 1 - 10 scale where 1 is the safest) and in the city you will probably have ratings ranging from 4 -7 unless you live in some of the safer areas at the edges of the city - which is the commute you are trying to avoid. There are many Internet sites that can provide you with relative crime rates.
But every area in the city probably has a higher crime rate than you are used to. Safety is of course relative, and Chicago is big so there are some areas that are much safer than others.
